Emilia-Romagna (Italy) Wine Zones

Emilia-Romagna

Emilia-Romagna

Emilia-Romagna is famous for its culinary products such as Prosciutto di Parma, Parmigiano Reggiano, and Balsamic Vinegar to name just a few. The wines here are often an afterthought but in reality Emilia-Romagna ranks third in wine production among Italian regions.

Lambrusco is the region’s most famous wine. Much of the wines made from Lambrusco are red, sparkling, and slightly sweet. Sadly, the Lambrusco known to many is rather simple at best ideally thrown down with some spicy sausages. That’s a shame as great Lambrusco wines made with care are among the most delicious wines you will ever taste. A sparkling, brut Rosé from Lambrusco di Sorbara just might change your life or at least your day.

Emilia-Romagna has 19 DOCs and two DOCG wines but only a handful of dedicated Italian wine nerds could name them both. Romagna Albana DOCG produces small amounts of dry white and sweet wines based on the Albana grape. Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto DOCG makes white and sparkling wines primarily from Grechetto. Both of these wines are most often consumed locally so if you see some at your local wine shop buy it.

Permitted grapes include:
White – Albana, Grechetto, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc
Red – Bonarda, Lambrusco, Sangiovese
