Appearance
Brilliant, pale golden color.
Aromatics
The aromatics are quite delicate offering scents of steeped grains, butterscotch, toffee, and subtle baked orchard fruits.
Flavor
The palate confirms the nose being a bit drier than expected with a grassy core and assertive notes of green tea emerging on the finish.
Intensity & Texture
Medium-bodied with bright grain and green notes that become astringent on the finish.
Cool Factor
I'm a big fan of grain to bottle distillers and I hope that this Wheat Whiskey is a work in progress.
Value Grade
At north of $40 a bottle this Whiskey will have a difficult journey finding its way to back bars outside of Iowa.
Analysis
Cedar Ridge is the first licensed distillery in the state of Iowa since Prohibition. Yes, these guys are really making Whiskey in Iowa. (I assume that everyone got that so let's move on.) The Cedar Ridge Wheat Whiskey is crafted with 100% malted wheat and aged in lightly charred casks. Considering the light color and subtle wood impression we imagine that the duration in wood does not exceed two years.
