Scofflaw Cocktail

The Scofflaw was created as a symbol of defiance against Prohibition. It is named after the term used for those who secretly drank spirits during Prohibition; the Scofflaw made its first appearance in 1924 at Harry’s Bar in Paris nearly a decade before Repeal.

Ingredients

1.5 oz. American Rye Whiskey
1 oz. Dry Vermouth
.75 oz. Lemon juice
.5 oz. Grenadine
1 dash of orange bitters
lemon twist for garnish

Occasion

You can serve this drink any day, but when sipped on Repeal Day, it has a special meaning.

Method

Place all of the ingredients in a shaker and top with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

Variations

There are many opportunities to swap in American Whiskies in this cocktail. Bourbon, Rye, and American Single Malt will all result in a lovely drink.
