The Americano
A BevX Cocktail Recipe
This long staple of the Italian cafe or Apéritivo bar was born at Caffè Camporino in Milan circa 1860. It was originally known as the "Milano-Torino," taking the name from the two homes of the primary ingredients. Later, during Prohibition, the drink became commonly known as the Americano, with the addition of soda, due to its tremendous popularity with American expats.
Ingredients
1 1/2 oz. Bitter (like Campari)
1 1/2 oz. Quality, Sweet Red Vermouth
1 oz. Soda
Orange peel or slice for garnish.
Occasion
This cocktail is an ideal apéritif and can be enjoyed any time of the year but I really like it when the sun is shining and I'm sitting outside.
Method
Fill a double Old Fashioned glass with ice and top with Bitter, Vermouth, and soda. Give a gentle stir. Garnish with the orange peel or slice.
Variations
The only real variation to consider, in my view, is the quantity of soda, from a splash to several ounces, that can make this a great tall cocktail. If you use Sweet Vermouth di Torino and skip the soda, you have made a Milano-Torino cocktail.
