Black Manhattan
A BevX Cocktail Recipe
The Black Manhattan is what happens when a great bartender asks a simple question: what if you replaced sweet Vermouth in a Manhattan with a rich, bittersweet Amaro? The answer, courtesy of Todd Smith at Bourbon & Branch in San Francisco, is a darker, more complex drink that retains the Manhattan's essential character while adding layers of herbal bitterness and dried fruit. Averna is the classic choice — its caramel and vanilla notes complement Rye Whiskey beautifully.
Ingredients
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
1 oz. Averna Amaro
1 dash Angostura Bitters
1 dash Orange Bitters
Occasion
An ideal aperitif or post-dinner drink. It is richer and more complex than a standard Manhattan, making it a natural choice for cooler months.
Method
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 20 seconds and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with a brandied cherry.
Variations
Bourbon in place of Rye produces a softer, sweeter result. Other amari — Montenegro, Ramazzotti, or Viparo — each change the drink's character significantly. Experiment freely.
