Brown Derby
A BevX Cocktail Recipe
The Brown Derby was developed at the Hollywood restaurant of the same name in the 1930s, named after the hat-shaped building that became a Tinseltown icon. It is a very simple cocktail: bourbon, fresh grapefruit juice, and honey syrup. This blend offers more than its ingredients alone. The grapefruit's bitterness complements the honey's sweetness, while the bourbon provides a steady, subtle backbone to the drink.
Ingredients
2 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Fresh grapefruit juice
1/2 oz. Honey syrup (2:1 honey to water)
Occasion
An excellent aperitif that is light enough for warm weather and warming enough for cool evenings. A great brunch cocktail as well, splitting the difference between a Mimosa and something with actual backbone.
Method
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.
Variations
Rye Whiskey brings more spice and works equally well. Thyme-infused honey syrup is a lovely variation in spring and summer. The ratio of grapefruit to honey can be adjusted depending on the sweetness of your fruit.
