Commodore Cocktail
The Commodore is a classic cocktail included in the Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book from 1935. The book offers two versions: one Rum-based and the other Bourbon-based. Both versions are quite sweet — bartenders did not shy away from sweet drinks in this era. Through the years, the Rum version has largely vanished. In modern versions, egg whites for thickening have been included in some recipes (the modern mixologist would add an egg white to a cup of tea…)
Our version is more tart than the original, making it ideal as an aperitif. Just one of these drinks should satisfy as you contemplate the evening ahead.
Ingredients
1.5 oz. Bourbon
.75 ounce white Crème de Cacao
.75 ounce fresh lemon juice
.75 ounce fresh orange juice
.25 ounce grenadine
2 dashes Orange Bitters
Occasion
Serve this drink when feeling a bit nostalgic seeking a trip to the 1930s Old Waldorf-Astoria.
Method
Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker one-third filled with cracked ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Skip the garnish in favor of quality orange bitters.
Variations
This drink has many variations featuring various fruit additions in differing proportions. The choice of Whiskey is also up for debate. We feature Bourbon in our version, but you could easily use Rye Whiskey or Blended Scotch Whisky.
