Agiorgitiko is perhaps Greece’s most important red wine grape. Agiorgitiko is native to the Peloponnese peninsula and is now the sole variety permitted in Greece’s Nemea appellation. It is one of the nation’s most planted varietals and is believed to be among the oldest. The fact that it is extremely versatile contributes to its widespread use, as it is used to create crisp rosé wines, light and fruity reds (akin to Beaujolais), and dark, full-bodied, tannic reds. It’s frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, as Cabernet’s acidity helps bolster Agiorgitiko’s attractive plum flavors and relatively low acidity.
