Beverage of the Week (BOW)
Unibroue La Fin Du Monde (Canada)
Product Story
La Fin Du Monde, which translates to “The End of the World,” was launched by Unibroue in 1994. The name does not signal the end of civilization, but it takes its name from the belief that early explorers to this part of North America exclaimed that they had indeed reached the end of the known world. It is said that this beer has won more international awards than any other Canadian beer. The style lies somewhere between a Belgian Golden Strong Ale and an Abbey Triple. This beer's complexity and balance deftly disguise its potent strength of 9% ABV. While you may be tempted to have several glasses of this great brew, we encourage a bit of restraint. La Fin Du Monde has been a favorite of ours for decades, and it’s as good today as it was in 1994.
Brand Story
André Dion founded Unibroue based on the idea of uniting Quebec’s microbreweries at the time for distribution in the provinces. That vision failed but from it the project's most promising brewery, Brasserie Massawippi became the property of Dion and Serge Racine. They hired young Belgian brewmaster Gino Vantieghem who created the tremendous core of Belgian-style beers that redefine the micro-beer movement in 1992. Blanche de Chambly was the first white beer in North America brewed in the Belgian tradition and refermented in the bottle. New expressions were developed and offered throughout the 1990s and through ownership changes in 2004 and 2006. While the parent company changed the beers and commitment to crafting world-class beer remained strong. Now more than three decades old Unibroue is still making the beers that won us over in the 90s.
Tasting Note
Deep gold with a subtle haze and a thick head built by a steady flow of fine bubbles. The aromas deliver a complex blend of fresh baked bread, coriander, honey, five spice, and hints of dried orange peel. The palate echoes the nose offering intricate citrus and malt notes with baking and pickling spices rounded out by notes of caramel and honey. Full-bodied and ideally balanced with great length and a warming finish.
How to Serve
Serve chilled in a tulip/flute glass. No need for a garnish.
Price: $ $11.99, 4-pack cans, 16 oz.
