Negroni Sbagliato

How sad the world would be without the Negroni! This is the ideal aperitif perking up the appetite and stimulating the mind to later cocktail or wine options as well as cuisine. Its fruity, citrus tinged, and semi-tart flavors offer the perfect transition from work mode to pleasure.

The Negroni Sbagliato is one of my favorite variations of a classic. Sbagliato roughly translates to wrong or mistake. It’s a playful name for this spritzy drink. It's an ideal aperitivo and a smart choice when the night will include several glasses of wine and perhaps other drinks. Removing a bit of the octane via the Gin is a great way to lighten the drink.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. Campari
1 1/2 oz. Sweet Vermouth
1 1/2 oz. Prosecco

Occasion

The Negroni is welcomed any time of the year and so is the Negroni Sbagliato. The Sbagliato version is lighter in alcohol making it a smart choice when having multiple drinks.

Method

Combine the Campari/Bitter and Vermouth with ice in a shaker and stir to combine. Strain into a large rock glass nearly filled with ice or a wine glass, then top with Prosecco. Garnish with an orange peel or orange slices.

Variations

I don’t want any variations on the classic Negroni — it has to be equal portions of Bitter, Vermouth, and Gin. The Sbagliato leaves more room for improvisation. The original recipe calls for equal portions of the three ingredients, but I like to double up the Prosecco, making it more of a spritz. I find a double portion of the Prosecco does not significantly dilute the primary flavors.
