Calabria (Italy) Wine Zones

Calabria makes up the “toe” of the boot and as you would guess, this is a hot-climate growing zone. There are nine DOCs here but no DOCG wines at the moment.

Ciro is the region’s best-known DOC. Here red, white, and rosé wines can be produced but the appellation is famous for its red wine made primarily with Gaglioppo. Gaglioppo is a natural cross of Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco. Its flavors are distinctive, marrying red fruits with wild herbs and earth notes. Gaglioppo is grown nearly exclusively in Calabria and it’s certainly the region’s mascot varietal.

Greco is Calabria’s most famous and prolific white varietal making sweet, dry, and sparkling wines.

Permitted grapes include:
White – Malvasia, Montonico Bianco
Red – Gaglioppo, Lacrima, Malvasia Nera
