Product Story
The name Maudite recalls the Quebec legend of La Chasse-galerie – or flying canoe – which tells of men who made a deal with the devil to fly their canoes to Montreal. An agreement required that no man could say the name of God. When one of them shouted, “Oh my God,” the canoes fell from the sky, and they were never seen again. Maudite was launched in 1992 and has been part of the brewery’s core collection since. It has won numerous awards and accolades over the years and has also become a favorite at BevX.
Brand Story
André Dion founded Unibroue based on the idea of uniting Quebec’s microbreweries at the time for distribution in the provinces. That vision failed but from it the project's most promising brewery, Brasserie Massawippi became the property of Dion and Serge Racine. They hired young Belgian brewmaster Gino Vantieghem who created the tremendous core of Belgian-style beers that redefine the micro-beer movement in 1992. Blanche de Chambly was the first white beer in North America brewed in the Belgian tradition and refermented in the bottle. New expressions were developed and offered throughout the 1990s and through ownership changes in 2004 and 2006. While the parent company changed the beers and commitment to crafting world-class beer remained strong. Now more than three decades old Unibroue is still making the beers that won us over in the 90s.
Tasting Note
Deep mahogany/amber with a subtle haze and a thick head built by a steady flow of fine bubbles. The aromas deliver a complex marriage of malt, orange, spices, with aromas of coriander and cloves, and floral hop notes. The palate echoes the nose, offering flavors of caramelized sugar, orange marmalade, and lightly roasted nuts with a spicy finish. Full-bodied and ideally balanced with great length and a warming finish.
