Texas Hill Country nominated for USA Today’s Best Wine Region

By Victoria Lopez, Hill Country Reporter

The Texas Hill Country’s picturesque views and wealth of wineries have made it a leading vino destination for decades. Tucked between two major metropolitan areas, the region is a nominee for a fresh national distinction.

USA Today listed the Texas Hill Country as a nominee for Best Wine Region in the U.S. in its 10 Best Reader’s Choice Awards. The Lone Star State has been nominated in the category for the past six years, ranking between No. 3 and No. 10 since 2018.

Texas, being bigger and better in everything it does, has an abundance of award-winning wineries. This American Viticultural Area is one of the largest in the country, with more than 50 different wineries, according to the nominee listing.

The region offers varietals ranging from “Viognier to Tempranillo to Cabernet Sauvignon to Merlot to Chenin Blanc to Aglianico to Sangiovese to Mourvèdre.”

From San Antonio’s backyard in Boerne to the heart of the Texas Wine Country in Fredericksburg, Texans have proven to not only know their wine but add a twist to tasting experiences. Many of the Hill Country’s wineries provide wine-tasting experiences alongside wildlife animals such as rhinos, zebras, and even giraffes. Others have balloon rides to experience the region’s scenic views from above.

USA Today readers have until Monday, July 22, to place their votes for their favorite wine region. The crowned winners will be announced on Wednesday, July 31.
