Regular readers at BevX know that we are subscribers to the theory that less is often more. This cocktail illustrates this point perfectly. Just three ingredients are required while the flavors are certainly more than a sum of its parts.
The Whiskey Sour is the ideal aperitif and it is not too shabby after dinner either. This cocktail is equally good on ice especially on a hot summer's day. When I serve mine on ice I like to add an orange slice to the glass.
2 oz. Quality Bourbon or Rye
3/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon fine sugar
A well-made Whiskey Sour needs no occasion nor any seasonal considerations.
Add the pair of ingredients to a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice. Shake vigorously to obtain the perfect mix and healthy foam. Keep the garnish simple. An orange slice or perhaps or a maraschino cherry is all that is needed.
You can dramatically alter this drink with the choice of Whiskey. Always use a bold Whiskey as this drink relies upon the primary ingredient to make a statement. Soft and sweeter wheat-based Bourbons get lost in the sour and do not do themselves or the cocktail justice.
