EggNog – BevX Style

Perhaps there is no other beverage that says Christmas and New Year's like eggnog. This decadently rich beverage is a hallmark of the holiday season and is a guilty indulgence for so many. It is certainly not for everyday drinking! The recipe we offer for eggnog is true to the classic with just a small twist. It is certainly not shy on calories or fat but as we said, it’s not for everyday consumption. We also realize that not everyone will want to make the eggnog from scratch. Some fear the raw eggs, others would simply prefer to not witness the "sausage making" so to speak, and will opt for a store-bought version. For once, we won’t scold you for this choice. We do ask that you find a quality version, preferably from a local dairy. If using store-bought eggnog, follow this ratio: One quart of eggnog/3 oz. Bourbon/1 oz. Coffee Liqueur. Add freshly ground nutmeg to taste.

Ingredients

4 Eggs
1/3 cup Sugar
3 cups Half & Half
3 oz. Bourbon
1 oz. Coffee Liqueur
Fresh nutmeg

Occasion

This is not the drink that one enjoys poolside in August. It's a holiday drink best consumed in the fall and winter months and perhaps a snowflake or two.

Method

Separate the four eggs keeping both the yolks and whites. In a large mixing bowl add the yolks and whisk until smooth and lighter in color. Add the sugar, a little at a time, and whisk until it is completely dissolved and incorporated. Now whisk in the Bourbon, followed by the coffee Liqueur, half & half, and a teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg. Beat the egg whites to soft peaks and slowly fold them into the yolk-based mixture. Chill well and serve.

Variations

Countless variations of the classic eggnog recipe can be found. The easiest way to alter the drink is by your choice of spirit. As long as it's a rich, wood-aged spirit like any Whiskey, aged Rum, or most Brandies you can't go wrong.
