Hemingway Daiquiri
The Hemingway Daiquiri is thought to have been created around the 1930s at the legendary El Floridita bar in Havana, Cuba. We do not know that Hemingway favored this drink with two citrus additions, but we somewhat reliably know that he liked his Daiquiri with double Rum and no or little sugar. The Hemingway Daiquiri we know today has no direct sugar addition, but of course, Liqueurs are made with sugar and certainly add sweetness to any drink. We love the lighter sugar touch provided by the Maraschino Liqueur as well as the subtle cherry flavor.
Ingredients
2 ounces white Rum
1/2 ounce Maraschino Liqueur
3/4 ounce limejuice, freshly squeezed
1/2 ounce grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed
Lime wheel, for garnish
Occasion
No occasion is needed but this drink really hits the spot when the sun is high and temperature is soaring.
Method
Add the four ingredients and a handful of cracked ice. Shake well, and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel, if you like.
Variations
This is one of the most famous and successful variations of a classic in the cocktail world. You could play around with the portions of citrus, and perhaps those with a sweet tooth could bump up the quantity of Maraschino Liqueur.
