Mint Julio
Sometimes cocktail ideas arrive in the oddest of situations. Years ago I accompanied my friend Jacques Bezuidenhout - Partida Tequila Brand Ambassador - to a local radio appearance. While sipping a few Tequilas in the 'green' room we were talking about the upcoming Kentucky Derby.Of course, the conversation quickly turned to cocktails and the traditional drink of the Derby; the Mint Julep. I joked that he should substitute the traditional Bourbon with anejo Tequila and call it the Mint Julio! We all chuckled and then thought - why not? Over the next few days I played with the cocktail and found that it's best with a healthy squeeze of Meyer Lemon. Enjoy this cocktail whenever refreshment is desired.
Ingredients
2 1/2 oz. Partida Anejo Tequila
1 tsp Agave Nectar
6 Fresh mint leaves
Squeeze of a Meyer Lemon wedge
Crushed ice
Occasion
This cocktail is best enjoyed in spring and summer. I created it with the intention of serving it at an unconventional Derby Day party with Mexican fare.
Method
Muddle mint leaves with the agave nectar and Meyer lemon juice in your glass of choice. Add a healthy dose of crushed ice and top with the Partida Anejo Tequila. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a slice of Meyer lemon.
Variations
If you must fool around with this one try mixing up the citrus using Key Limes perhaps. If you like heat try muddling a slice of fresh jalapeno with the mint.
