Singapore Sling - BevX Style

At BevX we have a penchant for classic cocktails that have evolved or perhaps even have become corrupted in some way through the years. The Singapore Sling is certainly one of those cocktails. Invented in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore sometime around 1910 to 1915, the original Singapore Sling looks nothing like the drink we see today. The original combined Gin, Cherry Brandy, and Benedictine shaken and topped with soda. The color was not shocking red as it is frequently seen today being colored with a healthy dose of grenadine.

Instead of presenting the cocktail in its original form we have opted to share our own version, based on Gin with Brandy, two Liqueurs and fresh lime.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. London Dry Gin
1 oz. quality Crème de Cerise
1/2 oz. VS Brandy
1/2 oz. Cointreau
3/4 oz. fresh limejuice
Dash of bitters

Occasion

This drink likes it hot but I can be convinced that it's good in front of a roaring fire. In other words — it's up to you.

Method

Pour or shake all ingredients into a mixing glass or shaker along with a handful of ice. Shake well and strain into a tall Collins glass with cracked ice. Garnish with a lime or orange slice and serve.

Variations

Ours is a bit of a variation as we substitute the classic addition of Benedictine with Cognac. We just like the simpler flavors of Cognac in this drink as Benedictine is a cocktail on its own being very complex and sweet. Don't venture too far from the original or it won't be a Singapore sling.
