Hot Butterscotch Rum

Traditional Hot Buttered Rum is a great winter warmer and never fails to get one in the mood of the season. However, I do have a small problem with the classic recipe; its largest volume ingredient is water. I don’t know what comes out of your tap but my water is rather lacking in the flavor department. We turn-up the butterscotch flavors creating a truly memorable beverage.

Ingredients

5 tablespoons of butter
1/4 cup Demerara sugar
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
2 ounces of heavy cream
1 quart whole milk
5 ounces of Dark Rum

Occasion

This hot and tasty beverage is great any time the temperature dips and it's a superb idea at holiday gatherings as it is easy to scale up for any size group.

Method

Put butter in a medium saucepan along with the sugars. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted, whisking to combine.

Continue cooking for five minutes or more until the mixture lightly smokes (not burnt) and the color becomes deep reddish brown and has the consistency of peanut butter. Remove from heat and add about an ounce of water stirring vigorously before adding the dairy and Rum. Stir to completely combine and return the saucepan to a low heat to keep warm or serve immediately topping with whipped cream and crumbled ginger snaps if you like.

Variations

There are many alternate versions of the classic Hot Buttered Rum. This version emphasizes rich and warm butterscotch.
