Campania (Italy) Wine Zones

Campania really has it all. Its capital city Naples (Napoli) is unique, vibrant, and the home of pizza while the Amalfi Coast is one of the world’s most beautiful tourist destinations. Of course, there is wine and Campania excels in both red and white wines boasting 15 DOCs and four DOCGs.

Aglianico is king in the region accounting for nearly one-third of the region’s grape totals. It’s the primary varietal in Campania’s two DOCG wines, Aglianico del Taburno DOCG and Taurasi DOCG. Both of these wines are powerful, complex, and age-worthy offering proof positive that Aglianico is one of thew world’s great red wine grapes.

With such famous reds you might think that Campania’s white wines would be overshadowed — think again. Actually, many wine drinkers think of white wines first when discussing Campania as half the DOCG wines are dedicated to white varietals: Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG. These two whites have earned their lofty positions but Campania also makes great whites from Falanghina, Coda di Volpe, and Malvasia.

See our story on Campania’s great white wines.

Lastly, don’t sleep on Campania’s charming sparkling and sweet wines.

Permitted grapes include:
White – Falanghina, Fiano, and Greco
Red – Aglianico, Alicante, Barbera, Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese
