Beringer Bros. Bourbon Barrel Aged - Red Blend California 2016
Product Story
This charming and hedonistic red blend is made with a blend of 41% Petite Sirah, 21% Syrah, 18% Petit Verdot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 2% other red grapes. The Beringer Bros. Bourbon Barrel Aged Red was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the bright fruit flavors. Only 20% of the finished wine is aged in second-pass Bourbon barrels for a period of 60 days. Utilizing second-pass Bourbon barrels (the very assertive Bourbon flavors are found in the first-use barrels) and limiting the contact to just 60 days, this wine is given subtle Bourbon barrel accents. We love the vanilla and coconut notes imparted by the barrels while the juicy black fruits are certainly dominant.
Brand Story
More than 150 years ago the Beringer brothers founded a winery and distillery in California’s Napa Valley. Today the Beringer name is virtually synonymous with California wine and the original distillery is all but forgotten. To honor their founders Beringer has introduced a new line called Beringer Bros. Bourbon Aged wines that to date include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Red Cuvee. The wines are cleverly aged for a brief period in second-pass Bourbon barrels that imparts the delicious subtle of charred American oak with accents of sweet Bourbon. The labels feature a historic photo of the Beringer Brothers in front of the old winery/distillery.
Tasting Note
Brilliant, deep ruby/crimson color. The aromatics are very intense offering scents of blackberry and boysenberry with supporting notes of roasted nuts, sour cherry, toasted coconut, and five spice. The palate confirms the nose delivering a red and black fruits-driven core with flavors of black fruits, vanilla, and violet. The finish is long and lingering with silky tannins. Full-bodied and ideally balanced with a voluptuous and complex while juicy texture.
How to Serve
Serve at cellar temperature with grilled meats, generously spiced stews, and beef curry.
