Beverage of the Week (BOW)
O'Hara's Irish Red Ale (Ireland)
Product Story
The O'Hara's Irish Red Ale is a more recent addition to the Carlow Brewing lineup as there is a renewed interest in the style. Some Irish beer aficionados may remember this ale called by its former name, Moling's Red Ale — also made at Carlow Brewing. The recipe has not changed. This is a classic top-fermented ale with a modest 34 IBUs that may confuse the dedicated hopheads but will delight those of us who remember when hops were an accent in beer rather than the dominant flavor. A superb session ale with charm to spare.
Brand Story
Carlow Brewing Company was established in 1996 in County Carlow, Ireland. They are best known for their O’Hara’s brand. Nine beers are found in O’Hara’s core range with another near dozen specialty and seasonal brews sold. The first O’Hara’s beers launched in 1998 — Curio Gold Wheat Beer and Moling's Red Ale. In 1999, O’Hara’s introduced their now famous O’Hara’s Irish Stout. They steadily grew increasing capacity several times and moving to their hometown of Bagenalstown, Carlow. A boutique distillery was added in 2012 and in 2013 they added lager and in 2015 Cider. Through the years have been a bright beacon in Irish brewing.
Tasting Note
Deep, ruby red color with a thick white head. The nose is filled with the scents of sweet, toasted malts supported by roasted nuts, caramel, and with a mild leafy, hop note. The palate echoes the aromatics delivering a dry but generous malty core with accents of nut, earth, and sweet caramel that finish mildly sour. Medium-bodied with ideal balance making this a great session beer.
How to Serve
Serve chilled in a tulip glass or conical glass. It's great all by itself but pairs well with beef stews or an aged cheddar.
Price: $ $6.99, 4 pk btls., 11 oz.
