Beverage of the Week (BOW)
Troon Vineyard Côtes Du Kubli Rouge Applegate Valley 2018
Product Story
We have sampled and enjoyed Rhone inspired red blends previously from Troon but this is the first Syrah dominant Troon wine that we have experienced. It certainly delivers classic Syrah notes of dark fruits with spicy accents while the Grenache provides a juicy and herbal backbone. Troon Vineyard is in the process of replanting their estate vineyard. In this transitional stage Troon is fortunate to have a relationship with their neighbors at Cowhorn Vineyard. The team at Cowhorn are providing Troon with great biodynamic-certified fruit. This lovely red blend was fermented with only natural yeasts and then aged in mature French oak barrels for 14 months. This wine reflects Troon Vineyard's wine making style that focuses on moderate alcohol, bright acidity, and a very light touch of oak.
Brand Story
Troon Vineyard started quietly over four decades ago when Dick Troon planted vineyards in Southern Oregon. He sold grapes to local wineries but soon discovered that the best business decision was to create his own wines. He converted his barn to a winery and slowly built the brand until he sold the winery to his friend Larry Martin in 2003. Today, Troon Vineyard is owned by Dr. Bryan White and Denise White. The Whites along with Craig Camp, general manager, and winemaker Nate Wall lead the innovative wine making efforts at Troon. Nate has extensive winemaking experience in the Willamette Valley and brings a nuanced, almost Pinot Noir approach to winemaking. Craig is a wine industry veteran with a sharp palate, encyclopedic knowledge of the wines of the world, and relentless energy. Troon offers a wonderfully diverse selection of varietal wines and blends ranging from Malbec to Tempranillo and Vermentino to name just a few. Beginning with the 2018 vintage the fruit utilized by Troon was farmed 100% organically and biodynamically. All Troon wines were crushed by foot, fermented with only native yeasts with no additives of any kind. If you are seeking unique wines with style and gusto you need to get acquainted with Troon Vineyard.
Tasting Note
Brilliant purple/ruby color with a mild turbidity signaling a wine that is not heavily filtered. The nose is moderately intense offering scents of black currant and earth with supporting notes of black cherry, leather, baking spices, and lavender. The palate confirms the nose delivering a black fruit-driven core with flavors of black fruits, pomegranate, and forest floor. The finish is long and lingering with supple tannins with subtle oak accents. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced with a supple yet vibrant texture.
How to Serve
This complex and supple wine is ready to drink now but it will cellar well for at least five years. Please decant this wine before drinking so it will show you its many nuances. Serve with braised or roasted meats.
