Troon Vineyard Vermentino Applegate Valley 2020

Product Story

We have been a fan of the Troon Vermentino since first tasting their 2014 vintage. We have watched as they have made decisions first in the their vineyards and then choices in winemaking. By no means do I think that their journey is finished but they have just made their best Vermentino to date. It was clear then, and remains certain, that the climate found in Oregon's Applegate Valley is ideal for growing grapes like Vermentino. Troon Vineyard's Vermentino is not styled in the mold of either French nor Italian Vermentino rather it is developed into a very unique style that is 100% Troon. Troon’s 2020 Vermentino has elements of flavor akin to the orange wine while also incorporating a more French-style we saw in earlier Troon Vermentinos. It is biodynamic, organic and spontaneously fermented with native yeasts — nothing is added. The result is a stunning wine with personality and charm.

Brand Story

Troon Vineyard started quietly over four decades ago when Dick Troon planted vineyards in Southern Oregon. He sold grapes to local wineries but soon discovered that the best business decision was to create his own wines. He converted his barn to a winery and slowly built the brand until he sold the winery to his friend Larry Martin in 2003. Today, Troon Vineyard is owned by Dr. Bryan White and Denise White. The Whites along with Craig Camp, general manager, and winemaker Nate Wall lead the innovative wine making efforts at Troon. Nate has extensive winemaking experience in the Willamette Valley and brings a nuanced, almost Pinot Noir approach to winemaking. Craig is a wine industry veteran with a sharp palate, encyclopedic knowledge of the wines of the world, and relentless energy. Troon offers a wonderfully diverse selection of varietal wines and blends ranging from Malbec to Grenache and Vermentino to name just a few. Beginning with the 2018 vintage the fruit utilized by Troon was farmed 100% organically and biodynamically. All Troon wines were crushed by foot, fermented with only native yeasts with no additives of any kind. If you are seeking unique wines with style and gusto you need to get acquainted with Troon Vineyard.

Tasting Note

Slightly hazy, light straw color. The aromatics are very intense offering scents of tropical fruit and kumquat with supporting notes of fresh herbs, wet stones, and lemon grass. The palate echoes the nose delivering a ripe orchard and tropical fruits-driven core with flavors of pineapple, kiwi, ripe pear, and quince. The finish is long and lingering with bright citrus accents. Medium-bodied and perfectly balanced with a vibrant texture.

How to Serve

This terrific white is the ideal aperitif offering complex flavors with bright acidity and a nimble, vibrant texture. At the table pair this Troon Vermentino with roasted fowl, aromatic curries, or smoked fish.
