Yebiga Bela Rakija

Product Story

The Yebiga Bela Rakija is a true treat. A pure and authentic Rakija (pronounced Ra-Kee-Ya) that is clearly made by master distillers. Rakija is a very specific style of fruit Brandy made in the Balkans. Rakija is an essential element of the local culture and is often made at home in an heirloom still. Most any fruit may be used — grapes, quince, or pears are popular but plums are considered to be the ultimate fruit base for Rakija. Yebiga's Bela is beautifully refined. If you have ever had a homemade Rakija it was likely quite heady. Yebiga Bela is expertly distilled offering alluring aromatics and a soft and complex palate. We urge BevX readers to expand your bar with this gem of a spirit.

Brand Story

The inspiration to create Yebiga comes from Bill Gould, bassist and founding member of the group Faith No More. His extensive travel through the Balkans over the past few decades resulted in a deep and enduring appreciation for the culture, the people, and their favorite aperitif. Bill partnered with one of Serbia’s most respected distilling families and introduced this quintessentially traditional product to the United States. Yebiga uses Cacanska Rodna and Cacanska Lepotica plums harvested from a long-held family orchard, on Goc Mountain, near the town of Kraljevo at an elevation of 810 meters above sea level. This is the ideal conditions for growing great plums destined to be a great spirit. We were instant fans of their "Bela." Yebiga also produces a wood-aged version (18 months in Serbian oak) that is also bottled overproof.

Tasting Note

Brilliant, crystal clear. The aromatics are profound and alluring led by ripe stone fruits with waves of forest floor, lavender, citrus zest, and wild flowers. The palate confirms the nose delivering a full expression of dark plum with generous spice notes including black pepper that rises on the finish. Medium-bodied and perfectly balanced with vibrant acidity ideally framing the ripe fruit. $29.99 –

How to Serve

Sip neat, typically at room temperature but you could chill it — slightly. Excessive chilling will mute the delicate and complex aromatics and flavors. Yebiga Bela can be used in cocktails but go easy on the additions taking care to not lose the unique flavors of this spirit.
