Product Story

Varela Hermanos is the family owned and run drinks company who created and crafts the delicious Ron Abuelo Rums. The family has been distilling in Panama since 1936 and the incredible stock of mature Rum is the brand's secret weapon. The aged Rums are created by carefully blending two styles of Rum produced at the distillery. The Ron Abuelo 12 is evidently made with a good portion of their heavy, rich Rum. Dense and concentrated fruits and exotic spice dominate the flavors of their delicious 12 year-old. This is the ideal Rum to present to your Bourbon loving friends as it will surely make them a Rum lover by the second sip.

Brand Story

Ron Abuelo is the creation of Varela Hermanos, S.A. that was founded in 1908 by Spanish immigrant Don José Varela Blanco. He established a sugar mill in the town of Pesé and to this day sugar is at the heart of the family operation. In 1936 the family starting distilling spirits from their own sugar cane juice. Four decades later in 1976 a new, modern distillery was constructed for the production of both sugar cane juice and cane honey (molasses) spirits. The production of these two unique cane spirits continues today. The primary Ron Abuelo portfolio consists of four aged Rums: Añejo, 7 years, 12 years, and Centuria. Centuria is a rare and special 30 year-old Rum while the Añejo through the 12 years are the heart of the Ron Abuelo offerings. The Añejo is among the absolute "best buys" in the Rum category as it's sophisticated while being very mixable and sold for about 15 dollars. The Ron Abuelo 7 years has always been a personal favorite as it strikes the perfect balance of vibrancy and decadence. Of course the 12 years is our featured Beverage of the Week so you know how we feel about this great Rum.
