Beverage of the Week (BOW)
Whiskey Del Bac Dorado Single Malt American Whiskey
Product Story
American Single Malt has come a long way in a short time and Whiskey Del Bac has emerged as one of the leaders in this growing category. All of their Whiskies experience a unique aging process thanks to the climate conditions found in Tucson, AZ. They experience a wide range of temperature swings from days to nights, resulting in the Whiskey traveling deeper and then more shallow in the wood giving a high extraction. While the pores of their casks widen and shrink there is a respectable play of oxygen, an essential element in the natural aging of any wine or spirit in cask, that gives their Whiskies an early mature character. The barley utilized in their Dorado is smoked over a mesquite wood fire. The Scots have peat — the American Southwest has mesquite. The mesquite does not overpower in any way in fact it’s quite subtle adding another wrinkle to this complex Whiskey. We are in love with this spirit and we are confident that you will love it too.
Brand Story
It was one of those cool desert nights in 2006 where Elaine and Stephen Paul sat outside on their patio, barbecuing over a mesquite fire and enjoying a glass of Scotch. Elaine had an idea — “What if you made single malt whiskey with ‘mesquited’ malt instead of peated malt?” It’s questions like this that launch an idea and spark a passion. From this simple moment sprang Whiskey Del Bac. In 2011 they founded Hamilton Distillers Group and launched the Whiskey Del Bac brand under it. Named after Tucson’s 17th century Spanish mission San Xavier del Bac, Whiskey Del Bac is a combination of English, Spanish, and the native Tohono O’Odham tongue meaning “Whiskey of the Place Where the River Reappears in the Sand.” While it may be tempting to call it Del Bac Whiskey, it is Whiskey Del Bac. The rest is history as they say but in truth, history is evolving and the best that Whiskey Del Bar has to offer is still coming in our estimation. A brand to watch for sure.
Tasting Note
Brilliant, medium copper/bronze color. The nose is intense, offering scents of caramel, cigar box, and cinnamon with supporting notes of oak, campfire, and black tea. The palate echoes the nose delivering a malted barley-driven core with supporting flavors of baking spices, dried fruits, and hints of cashew butter. The finish is long and lingering. Full-bodied and favorably balanced with an opulent texture.
How to Serve
This Whiskey needs nothing but a glass. Sip neat with a splash of water to better allow the complex aromatics and flavors to bloom.
