Beverage of the Week (BOW)
Egan's 10 Years Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey
Product Story
This is a rich and hearty, double distilled Irish Single Malt that will surely delight devotees to the category. It's bottled at a generous 47% abv and non-chill filtered to preserve its silky texture and complex aromatics. While many new Irish Whiskey brands are emerging these days grabbing names from the hat of of Irish distillers long forgotten, the Egan's brand is being revived by the Egans themselves. The sixth generation of Egans, direct descendants of Patrick Egan Sr., who founded the brand in County Offaly in 1852. We look forward to future releases.
Brand Story
In 1852 Patrick Egan Sr. launched P&H Egan in Tullamore, County Offaly. The Egans were merchants involved in malting, brewing, and bottling. Prior to World War II the Egans got into the Whiskey business purchasing Whiskey from distillers such as Paddy and Jameson then aging and blending the spirit that would be bottled under the family name. P&H Egan liquidated in 1968 and naturally the Egan’s Whiskey disappeared from the marketplace. The current crop of Egans have had an itch to get the family back into the Whiskey business. Jonathan Egan recalls visiting his grandfather in Tullamore listening to him regale stories of P&H Egan's disparate businesses. Further inspiration came from friend and drinks industry veteran John Ralph. On a visit to the Egan’s home Ralph observed the family moments that included old beer barrels and bottles along with a collection of old labels and advertisements. Ralph proclaimed, “The Egans have a real heritage, a real legitimate brand history that is not contrived and we needed to launch it asap!” The rest in history in the making.
Tasting Note
Brilliant, crystal clear. The aromatics are beautiful and complex ideally marrying cereal grains with rich honeycomb, caramel, wild flowers and herbs, mint, delicate citrus notes, and sweet oak with a hint of campfire. The palate fully confirms the nose delivering a lush toffee-like core with waves of herbs, brown baking spice, and honey in support. Full-bodied and quite silky with perfect balance and long, lingering flavors that become both dry and sweet.
How to Serve
Sip neat with a generous splash of water as the water helps the Whiskey to bloom revealing all of its complex and layered flavors.
